My spouse just passed away, leaving unpaid balances on credit cards, Visa, MasterCard and department store credit cards. What is my responsibility in this matter?

Your spouse's creditors are required to be paid from your spouse's estate. If there are no assets in the estate then creditors have no recourse unless you personally signed the contracts as well. The executor (if there is one) should be notified of the creditors otherwise a letter to the creditors should take care of the matter.
